Downers Grove, Ill.; Dec. 30, 2009 – Students from 14 local schools in DeKalb, DuPage, Kane and Kendall Counties have won prizes in the “Do Your Part – Be Water Smart” poster contest held recently for third- through sixth-graders by PAMCANI, the Plumbing and Mechanical Contractors Authority of Northern Illinois.
“We are very proud of the work that students in our area have done over the 16 years that we have been sponsoring a poster program to encourage water conservation,” said S.J. Peters, executive director of PAMCANI. “It indicates continuing interest in a subject of ongoing concern to all of us,” he added.
Sycamore Student Wins Grand Prize
The Grand Prize of a $500 U.S. Savings Bond was won by Israel Zarate, a 6th grader at Sycamore Middle School, Sycamore; as a result, his school was awarded a $2,000 Computer Discount Warehouse gift certificate.
Other prizes were awarded for 1st through 3rd place and optional honorable mentions in each grade level; the winning students received U.S. Savings Bonds of $200, $150, $100 or $75, respectively. In addition, schools that had first-, second- or third-place individual winners received $100, $50 or $25, respectively.
The other winners are:
Batavia: Anna Rakos, 4th grade, 2nd place and Macey J. Sloss, 4th grade, 3rd place, both of Grace McWayne School.
Clarendon Hills: Jesse Bonaguro, 5th grade, honorable mention, Notre Dame School.
Downers Grove: Karina Kling, 5th grade, 1st place, Prairieview Elementary School; Jonathan Guttello, 5th grade, 3rd place and Casie Cahoon, 5th grade, honorable mention, both of St. Mary of Gostyn School.
Elgin: Chloe Richardson, 4th grade, 1st place, Westminster Christian School.
Glendale Heights: Maria Shenny, 6th grade, 2nd place, Marquardt Middle School and Veronika Srey, 5th grade, honorable mention, Reskin School.
Itasca: Krista Valavicius, 3rd grade, 2nd place, Franzen Intermediate School.
Naperville: Amsal Jagshi, 3rd grade, 1st place and Eva Sazonova, 4th grade, honorable mention, both of May Watts School.
Sycamore: Olivia Lohse, 6th grade, honorable mention, Sycamore Middle School.
Villa Park: Sania Irfan, 3rd grade, 3rd place and Emily Iozzo, 5th grade, 2nd place, both of York Center School.
Willowbrook: Onpailin Rangsithienchai, 6th grade, 1st place and Andra Jankauskaite, 6th grade, 3rd place, both of Westview Hills Middle School.
