Downers Grove, Ill.; May 21, 2008 – Twenty contractors earned trophies in the
seventh annual “Commitment to a Safe Workplace” competition for 2007 sponsored
by the Plumbing and Mechanical Contractors Authority of Northern Illinois (PAMCANI) as the
organization announces increased efforts to encourage safety in the work place.
“We are revitalizing our Safety Committee under the chairmanship of Michael Wiedmaier
of Hayes Industries, Inc., Elgin,” said S.J. Peters, executive director of PAMCANI.
Other members of the newly reconstituted committee are Doug Flader, Flader Plumbing &
Heating Co., Vernon Hills; Fred Kline, Keystone Mechanical Industries, Inc., Northbrook;
Chris Buddy, Paul L. Buddy Plumbing & Heating and Cannonball Mechanical Corp., Aurora;
Jerry Yankus,CSP, Yankus Safety Consultants, Inc., Woodridge; and Peters.
“We also look forward,” Peters added, to forging an alliance with the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration and to adding a section on workplace safety to our web site.
Our increasing emphasis on safety is a priority for us because most of our work is done on
customers’ premises. So safer practices not only benefit our own workforce but enhance
our customers’ experience and satisfaction as well.”
Yankus Safety Consultants, explained Peters, has been retained for ongoing services in support
of the committee’s work. Jerry Yankus, head of the firm, has been an independent safety
consultant since 1988. Before founding his consultancy, he was employed by several large industrial
corporations to plan and manage their safety programs. He earned a bachelor’s degree in
industrial technology and safety at Illinois State University, Normal, and is credentialed as a
Certified Safety Professional by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, the leader in
high-quality credentialing for safety, health and environmental practitioners.
IDOL Director Honors Winners
Catherine Shannon, director of the Illinois Department of Labor, was on hand to honor the
contractors who won the awards by improving on their own prior three-year running averages in
categories such as number and rate of lost work days and workers’ compensation filings.

maintain plumbing, heating and cooling systems for institutional, commercial, business and

advancement, education and training of apprentices, journeymen and contractors, and actively
